The beautiful white and creamy yellow variegated leaves of Fish Pepper are so striking that it could be considered an ornamental variety. The 3 inch pepper pods are uniquely colorful, they start creamy white to yellow, then turn to light green with darker green striations, then turn orange with dark brown striping. At full maturity they turn solid red and are packed with heat. This Heirloom variety originated in the Caribbean; it was brought to the East Coast in the early to mid 1800’s. It was grown by Africain-American Farmers primarily in Baltimore and Philadelphia. It gained its name when it became the “secret ingredient” for spicy fish sauces of oyster and seafood houses in the area. It can be used fresh, dried and crushed, to makes sauce or to spice up any dish with a dash of heat.
