The Ayers Pear Tree (pyrus communis 'Ayers') is an old variety, particularly favored in the South as the "sugar" pear because the pulp tastes like candy. Blooms early and ripens in September. Ayers pears have a smooth flesh and contain a moderately high sugar content. Ayers should be picked and allowed to ripen off the tree for several days before eating. A medium to fast grower, gaining 12-18" per year. Space at least 15-18' when planting.
