Rudbeckia maxima (Giant Coneflower) is a striking, tall herbaceous perennial prized for its bright yellow, daisy-like flowers from mid-summer to early fall. This late-blooming coneflower produces large blossoms, up to 3 in. across (7 cm), with broad, drooping, golden-yellow petals surrounding a prominent dark brown central cone that may reach 2-6 in. tall (6-15 cm). Rich in nectar, the flowers attract butterflies and other pollinators, rising on sparsely leaved stems above a bold clump of large, smooth, blue-gray leaves. In fall and winter, the decorative seedheads extend the plant’s season of interest and provide food for visiting birds. Giant Coneflower is an easy-going perennial that tolerates light shade, heat, occasional drought, and a wide range of soils. It is excellent at the back of sunny borders, in cutting, pollinator, or cottage gardens, and in meadows or naturalized plantings.
